Nowadays most British children go to comprehensive schools which take pupils of all abilities without any exam. Comprehensive schools offer a wide choice of subjects from art and craft to the science and computer studies. Pupils at the school offer put into “sets”. Sets- are small groups of children formed according to ability in each subject. All pupils move to the next class automatically at the end of the year.

Before comprehensive school was introduced in 1965 by the British government all children took an exam at the age of 11 called “eleven-plus”. Those who got a best result at this exam were chosen to go to the best state school called “Grammar school”. Those, who failed exam, went to secondary modern school. A lot of people in Britain thought that this system of selection at the age of 11 was unfair on many children. But in small number of counties they still keep the old system of grammar schools

GCSE Exam
At the age of 14 or 15in the third or fourth form of secondary school, pupils begin to choose their exam subject and prepare for their exams. At the end of the 5 form pupils take their first public exam for the General Certificate of Secondary Education. Leave the school at the age of 16 they can go to a Further Education College where they choose more practical courses, for example, typing, hairdressing

Sixth Form
Pupils who stay on into sixth form, lasting 2 years, prepare for their “A” Level Exams. “A” stands for “Advanced”. Good “A” Level result in two – five subjects are necessary to get a place at one of British universities.
Independent
School
Since 1944 free secondary education has been available to all children in Britain. Private schools are called by different names: preparatory schools are for pupils aged up to 13. These schools are expensive (6000 – 9000 pounds a year). In a lot of public school children live as well as study, they are called boarding school. The most famous British public schools are Harrow, Winchester and Eton which date back to the 15 century. A lot of public schools are known for their high academic standards and prestigious. They believe that all children’s should be given opportunities at the start.
