Phraseological fusions are non-motivated groups forming indivisible wholes both semantically and syntactically. Their meaning in Modern English does not depend on the meaning of the component elements. They seldom, if ever, have equivalents in the S and T languages and are usually rendered by interpreting translation or by paraphrasing, e.g. to paint the lily – пытаться улучшить или украсить что-л., нуждающееся в улучшении или украшении; заниматься бесплодным делом; тратить время или силы попусту. To show the white feather – струсить, проявить трусость.

The term ‘phraseology’ originated in Russian studies which developed from the late 1940’s to the 1960’s . In linguistics, the term ‘phraseology’ describes the context in which a word is used. This often includes idioms, phrasal verbs, and proverbs. “Phraseology is a fuzzy part of language. Although most of us would agree that it embraces the conventional rather than the productive or rule-governed side of language, involving various kinds of composite units and ‘pre-patterned’ expression such as idioms, fixed phrases, and collocations,we find it difficult to delimit the area and classify the different types involved”.

A word-group is the largest two-facet lexical unit comprising more than one word but expressing one global concept.
The lexical meaning of the word groups is the combined lexical meaning of the component words. The meaning of the word groups is motivated by the meanings of the component members and is supported by the structural pattern. But it’s not a mere sum total of all these meanings! Polysemantic words are used in word groups only in 1 of their meanings. These meanings of the component words in such word groups are mutually interdependent and inseparable (blind man – «a human being unable to see», blind type – «the copy isn’t readable).

Актуальность данного исследования обусловлена необходимостью углубления в историю языка , знанием тех или иных деталей перевода и уяснением понятия «ложные друзья переводчика», которые встречаются в данной сфере довольно часто.
Перевод фразеологизмов фигурирует как одна из самых сложных частей перевода, потому что фразеологизмы в большей степени являются частью истории языка.
Глава I “Theoretical aspects of phraseological units’ translation” посвящена анализу истории возникновения «фразеологии» и особенностям перевода фразеологических единиц.
В главе II “The practical work in phraseological units’ translation” рассматривается четыре типа фразеологизмов и их переводы.
